The Grand-St-Bernard Hospice is undoubtedly the best known monument and the most imposing in the Pays du St-Bernard. Founded nearly 1000 years ago, the monks offer travellers food and lodging as well as peace and comfort… especially those who arrive on foot or on ski ! A treasure at the heart of the mountain, the Grand-St-Bernard Hospice has for centuries brought peace and comfort to travellers. It was in the 11th century that Bernard de Mento, archdeacon, and future St-Bernard of Mont-Joux, founded this hostel for travellers crossing the pass. Since the 17th century, monks have raised the St-Bernard dogs, precious helpers in mountain rescue missions. Today, the hospice is not simply a place to stay en route but a haven of peace encouraging spirituality.
